Our History

It was 1997 when Lela Beckwith and Howard Piepenbrink started making plans for a training program along with certifications, and an annual awards program.  Terry Beckwith was working in the accounting department for an Electronics firm in the Los Angeles area.  The first class was held at Harbor Island in San Diego.  The class was Orientation to Federal Indian Lands.  Flyers were prepared and mailed out throughout Indian country on a cold Thursday in Lawrence, Kansas.  It was a family project.  Bobby Beckwith, his wife Shirley and Warren, his wife, Susie helped with sending the advertisements out.  Granddaughters Cortney, age 8 and Autumn, age 4 were placing the stamps on various locations on the flyers.  By the following Tuesday 30 people had enrolled and people were on the waiting list for the class scheduled for February 1999.  It was the training people had been waiting for since BIA’s closure of the Office of Technical Assistance and Training (OTAT).  OTAT was originally located on the campus of Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah.  By 1982 the last summer session was held at Haskell Indian Junior College (now Haskell Indian Nations University) in Lawrence, Kansas.  After OTAT there was very little training until ICC training.
